Q & A
Q. Are BIOFUTURA-US bags compostable?
A. Yes, our bags are 100% compostable and biodegrade into non-toxic material. We are BPI Certified which is the gold standard of compostable certification recognized world-wide. Although our bags can be home composted it is recommended that these bags be composted in a municipal or industrial composting facility.as there can be assured a good mix of microorganisms needed for the process.
Q. What are BIOFUTURA-US bags made of?
A. Our bags are made of cornstarch PLA and PBAT which compost into nontoxic residue. Our bags are earth-friendly and marine and land animal friendly. Cornstarch is biomaterial. PLA is derived from fermented plant starch, PBAT is a compostable material derived from fossil material and is a compostable thermoplastic starch. The mixture of the above yields a high-quality compostable bag that is affordable.
Q. How long does it take for these bags to compost?
A. It takes 80 days for our bags to compost in a municipal or industrial site and 180 days to home compost.
Q. Is there a difference between biodegradable and compostable products?
A. Yes. Everything is biodegradable, it just takes different amounts of time to do so. Plastic bags take 500-1000 years to biodegrade and they photo-degrade into toxic residue which is harmful to our environment. Compostable bags biodegrade in a short period of time into earth-friendly non-toxic organic material.
Q. There are so many bags being sold today as biodegradable and containing plant-based material. What is the difference between BIOFUTURA US bags and other bags?
A. Our bags are made of 100% compostable material (cornstarch and other compostable materials). Beware and carefully read the fine print on other bags. Some bags are combining recycled plastic added to plant-based material therefore, the recycled plastic will still degrade into toxic residue and will take 500-1000 years to degrade. Some companies are purporting to be earth-friendly and marine friendly while they are made of HDPE which is a plastic and will degrade quicker into toxic residue.
Q. What does the printing on the bag, ASTM D6400-19 mean?
A. ASTM D6400-19 is a certification given by the American Society for Testing Materials. The 19 means criteria have been updated in 2019. ASTM is the gold standard for compostablilty that is recognized internationally and means that our bags are tested and verified that they are made up of natural materials that are compostable in a certain period of time: 180 days home, 80 days in landfill or industrial facility. Our manufacturer has this certification and our company is in the process of getting certification.
Q. Are your bags sustainable?
A. Yes. Our bags are made from corn starch and PLA which can be derived from corn stover (the waste stalks and cobs of corn). A portion of our bag is made from PBAT which is derived from fossil material and is a thermoplastic starch which enables compostability and allows our bags to return to the earth into non-toxic residue.
Q. How much weight do can these bags hold?
A. These bags are designed to be comparable to plastic bags and can hold 7-8 lbs., which is the standard for T-shirt bags. In an experiment, they held more.
Q. How do I store these bags?
A. These bags should be stored at a cool to room temperature. If they get hot, they will start to degrade and start composting.
Q. Is there a recommended usage date?
A. Yes. Because these are made from natural materials and are compostable, it is best to use them within one year.
